Great choices of images Eric and great mosaic to kick your post off. It is so interesting that stacks can be interpreted so differently by different artists.

What a wonderful collection of interesting stacks! Yes, artists like to do them - also in mixed media paintings, where you would probably call them "layers".
Good fun to see what you've found!
